Back in Ed 4 'To do or die', there was that poignant picture. How different the river can look in mid-summer! Those nutrients, eternally, do their work without any help from man.

  “Fly fishermen are born honest, but they get over it”.   – Ed Zern     The weather forecast was another day of scorchio, although this hot summer is expected to break in a couple of days’ time. We seem to visit Chiphall Lake about once each year, [episodes 6, 22, 25, 33, 45, & 52 refer]. Today, the Admiral, Inspector, Whytee and Dodgy proudly flew the FC banner, joined by the Professor a couple of hours late; three other chaps had braved the heat too. Martin was holding court on the lodge’s veranda, which is definitely a kind of community and family hub, with friends and relations always dropping by for a brew and a chat, mostly non-fishers. The Fluff Boys generally paid for two-fish tickets, having first checked Martin was amenable to an upgrade if anyone caught too quickly.   There was a good deal of surface weed, silkweed, and scum, but at least that provided a lot of shade, presumably helping to keep water temperatures from rising too high. Ed 15 : Another dog day

    Every once in a while, you see something which makes you stop in wonder. In my experience this never happens when you have a camera with you; Mother Earth knows all about this, and then gives but a glimpse, leaving an image burned onto your cranial hard drive. Two such instances were separated by several years, but happened within twenty-five feet of each other.   Weston Shore, lapped by Southampton Water, has a tiny rivulet flowing into it across the stony beach at West Wood. A shingle bank has caused it to flow parallel to the Water for about two hundred and fifty yards, deepening it in places and backing it up before it spills over and through the shingle in tiny threads out into the sea . The source of this trickle once upon a time filled three ornamental ‘lakes’ before flowing through a culvert under the road to Netley, where it has scoured out a deeper channel and a pool before turning right, into its short course to mix with the seawater. The Continuing Adventures of the Fluff Club, Episode 49

It gives you the opportunity of being totally immersed, turning back into yourself in a good way. A form of communion with levels of yourself that are deeper than the ordinary self”. – Ted Hughes Duncton Mill is a beautifully matured fishery set in a picturesque vale. Usually on a membership basis it does allow non-member day tickets in the colder months, hence today’s venue for a Fluff Club outing. The fishery was the scene for episodes 12 and 31, today was yet another cold one: last night it had dropped to just one degree c, with a forecast high of nine, but a dry day, at least.
